What is the Chipper Program?
The Chipper Program is a free fuel reduction program being implemented to help decrease our community’s threat from wildfire. Fire Safe San Mateo will provides a wood chipper,
which is used to chip vegetation removed by homeowners. The chipper is utilized to help residents create defensible space around their homes.
How can I participate?
All we ask is that you stack your materials along the roadside (following the guidelines). Your neighborhood will be assigned a designated day when the chipping will take place.
Who will do the chipping?
The chipping is conducted by the San Mateo County using private chipping contracts.
Size and Stacking Procedures
Vegetation should be piled along the roadside with all cut ends facing towards the street. Please limit your pile size to 10’ x 6’ x 6’. Please do not obstruct the roadway when stacking your material!
What kinds of fuels can be chipped?
Brush, and tree limbs up to 6” can be chipped. Material cannot contain nails or screws, as it can damage the chipper and personnel. No lumber is allowed.
*The chipper cannot chip Eucalyptus bark, poison oak, vines or greens.
** If piles contain prohibited items or are not stacked properly, they WILL NOT be chipped.
