San Mateo County Parks

San Mateo County Parks and FIRE SAFE San Mateo County partnered with CAL FIRE hand crews to build shaded fuel breaks in the county's largest wooded parks, reducing the fuel connecting parkland to the neighborhoods at its edges.

The county Parks Department manages 16 parks, three regional trails, and numerous county and local trails totaling more than 15,000 acres, in settings from a coastside marine reserve to bayside recreation areas to coastal mountain woodland. The wooded parks along the Skyline corridor sit directly upslope and upwind of Woodside-area neighborhoods, which makes their fuel condition a community protection issue, not just a land management one.

Wunderlich Park

CAL FIRE hand crews conducted extensive shaded fuel break construction in Wunderlich Park in 2012, with additional fuel reduction completed in 2013. The treatments thinned understory fuels and ladder fuels along strategic alignments in the park's oak and redwood woodland.

Huddart Park

Crews conducted parallel shaded fuel break work in Huddart Park on the same schedule, 2012 construction with follow-up reduction in 2013, treating fuels along the park's boundary with adjacent residential areas.
