San Mateo County Parks
The San Mateo County Environmental Services Department, Parks and Recreation Division, manages 16 separate parks, three regional trails, and numerous other county and local trails encompassing 15,680 acres. These facilities are located throughout the County and represent a wide variety of natural settings including a Coastside marine reserve, a Bayside recreational area, coastal mountain woodland areas, and urban sites. County Parks are typically large, regional parks that serve a significant population from the County and throughout the greater Bay Area region.
Wunderlich Park
CAL FIRE Hand Crews conducted extensive shaded fuel break construction in Wunderlich park in 2012. Additional vegetative fuel reduction work will be conducted in 2013.
Huddart Park

Highlands Recreation District
Highlands Fuel Break
Partners from Fire Safe San Mateo are working on a fuel break to protect the structures in the Highlands subdivision adjacent to 40 acres of County Open Space managed by the Highlands Recreation District. They have been working with the Highlands Recreation District on this project for the past several years, using the Ben Lomond Conservation Camp fire crews to cut, pile and burn vegetation
Highlands fuel break runs along a historic stage coach road that was once the main route to downtown San Mateo. This road now separates the open space from a residential area that is architecturally significant as the largest contiguous development of Eichler homes. Similar developments in Palo Alto are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Town of Hillsborough
Open Space Vegetation Management Project
In Hillsborough during the summer and fall of 2013, the Town’s ambitious Open Space Vegetation Management Project will utilize CAL FIRE Hand Crews to create 20 acres of Defensible Space Zones between 8 of the Town’s open-space areas and neighboring residential properties. This fuel reduction project will have an immediate impact on the neighboring community, with targeted fuel reduction in the critical defensible space zones. Hillsborough is actively seeking proposals to perform additional fuel reduction and vegetation management on approximately 88 acres of High Priority Fire Management Areas (HPFMAs) within the 240 acres of open space lands owned by the Town.

City of Burlingame
Mills Canyon Shaded Fuel Break
In Burlingame during the summer and fall of 2013, CAL FIRE hand crews will create a two mile shaded fuel-break in Mills Canyon Park, providing a reduced fuel buffer zone between the park’s vegetation and neighboring homes. The objectives will be to disrupt the horizontal continuity of surface fuels, vertical continuity resulting from ladder fuels, and increase shrub and understory crown spacing in a 30’ shaded fuel break, allowing for a full 100’ of defensible space for most properties at the park’s boundaries.

Crystal Springs Watershed
San Francisco Water Department
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) provides water for 2.4 million people in San Francisco and portions of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda counties. Approximately 85 percent of this water originates in the snow- capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, and about 15 percent is collected from local rainfall in the East Bay and the San Francisco Peninsula. The Peninsula Watershed includes three reservoirs and their respective sub watersheds: San Andreas Reservoir, Upper and Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir, and Pilarcitos Reservoir. The Peninsula Watershed encompasses 23,000 acres and is a unique natural resource located in a predominately-urbanized region. WIldfire Fuel Reduction projects are conducted annually in San Mateo County, primarily withing the Crystal Springs Watershed, to protect he water resources and neighboring communities. San Francisco Water Department is an active participant with Fire Safe San Mateo, and holds a seat on the Board of Directors.
